Original props from 2001: A Space Odyssey on display...

This is the final installment of movie memorabilia on display at the Stanley Kubrick exhibit at LACMA that I photographed on January 10, 2013 and these props are from the filmmaker's 1968 vision of the future, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

These original props featured in the sci-fi epic helped create the futuristic look of the film, including these modernist Djinn chair and sofa designs by Olivier Mourge which featured in the travel lounges found aboard the orbiting Space Station V.

Hamilton watch prop from 2001: A Space Odyssey

When making the film, Stanley Kubrick approached a variety of companies to design futuristic looking products for the movie, including the U.S. watchmaking company Hamilton.

Also featured in the movie were these examples of minimalist cutlery by Arne Jacobsen, which had the perfect sleek and futuristic look for the science fiction film.

Reproduction model of the Discovery One spaceship

Included alongside these original props was this reproduction of the classic Discovery One spaceship, which was controlled by the HAL 9000 mainframe computer.

There's nothing like a monkey suit to make you smile, especially when it's one from the Dawn of Man, like this one from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It really was a treat to see this original 'Moonwatcher' mask and full body costume from the 1968 sci-fi classic on display at LACMA's Stanley Kubrick exhibit in L.A. on January 10, 2013.

This costume and mask feature in The Dawn of Man section at the start of movie, which depicts scenes from early human evolution where Moonwatcher, the dominant male man-ape of the tribe, first encounters the mysterious black Monolith which encourages his use of bones as both tools and weapons.

Makeup legend Stuart Freeborn, who recently passed away, was responsible for the creature effects makeup on this epic sci-fi movie. Apparently it took around two years to craft the masks with moving lips and tongues, along with realistic looking simian teeth and the apelike hominid body suits which were made from human, yak and horsehair.

Seeing them up close, especially considering when they were made, it's easy to see why his work so impressed George Lucas that the director asked him to handle the makeup for Star Wars, where he created the likes of 'Yoda' and 'Chewbacca'.

Original spacesuit and helmet from 2001: A Space Odyssey on display...

Stanley Kubrick's 1968 epic sci-fi movie 2001: A Space Odyssey was inspired by Arthur C. Clarke's short story The Sentinel and chronicled a series of encounters between humanity and mysterious black monoliths and their apparent involvement in human evolution. Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood star as astronauts who undertake a fantastic voyage with the sentient computer HAL 9000 after discovering such a monolith on the Moon emitting a signal into space.

Hardy Amies was the Costume Designer responsible for the futuristic fashions depicted in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Also on display with the spacesuit was this red helmet from a different spacesuit worn by Keir Dullea as 'Dr. David Bowman' in the movie.

For the exhibit they cleverly projected the actor's likeness onto the visor of the helmet to recreate the feel of the movie.

Original Starchild prop from 2001: A Space Odyssey...

For me, one of the highlights of the fantastic Stanley Kubrick exhibition at LACMA on January 10, 2013 was this original 'Starchild' prop from the genre-defining sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In the 1968 sci-fi spectacular, humanity journeys into space with the artificial intelligence computer H.A.L. 9000 after discovering a mysterious alien object on the Moon.

The epic movie won the Oscar for Best Special Effects and this ethereal looking Starchild appeared at the end of the film watching over Earth.

I don't know what was more disconcerting about this prop, it's eerie lifelike eyes or seeing its skull open, exposing the animatronics that probably moved those same eyes in the film.

Even though it's now 2013, you have to agree that this is a pretty impressive original prop to behold.
