Scissor Happy

Sunday, June 27, 2010

The lovely white dress that I bought from Dorothy Perkins has arrived. I was a little disappointed at first because it didn't suit me. The sleeves plus the volume of the skirt just looked a bit much for someone as short as me. But the white cotton fabric was so lovely I couldn't bear to send it back. Instead I decided to customise it by chopping it up with a pair of dressmaking shears that I recently unearthed from the back of my wardrobe. The perfect little project to do sitting on the sun lounger in the garden during a rare hour or two I had to myself. I was a little apprehensive about chopping up a brand new dress (as was Mr Style Eyes) in case I ruined it but in the end was really pleased with the result.

Here is how it looked to start with.

remove dress sleeves First I trimmed off some of the excess material and folded the material inwards to the shoulder seam and pinned in place.
Then I hand stitched along the arm seam on the inside of the dress to create a sort of mini puffed sleeve. I have used the sewing machine but couldn't be bothered to get it down from the cupboard, plus I wanted to sit outside in the sunshine.

I also think this dress will work much better with a bit of a sun tan (I am working on it).

A green summer dress for St Patricks day

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Happy St Patricks day (for tomorrow) to celebrate the occasion, I thought I would write a post on the green dress. Green is actually one of my favourite colours and one which I think it is an severely unutilised colour in terms of fashion. I love all sorts of green from khaki to lime and mint green. I also love green combined with other colours in patterns. There are so many different greens, surely there is something for everyone. Here are some of my favourite green dresses of the moment.
Lola Dress by Komodo - I think khaki is possibly my favourite shade of green and right on trend this year. I also love the subtle pattern on this dress, could definitely be worn with leggings as my spring 'uniform'.

Green Inca Tunic Dress - a complex and intricate pattern with a great combination of greens.

St Martins embellished back dress - this vibrant shade of green may not be to every ones liking but I love it. This wrap style of dress is also really flattering.

Philosophy Di Alberta Ferretti Draped dress - I love the simple style and elegant draping of this dress as well as the warm green colour, the perfect summer party dress.

Fever Seamist Tunic Dress -love this bold pattern in a bold colour. It really reminds me of the sea.
