Simon Pegg's movie costume from The World's End on display...

Sunday, June 22, 2014

There's been a lot of talk about director Edgar Wright's exit from Marvel's Ant-Man movie, but before he was focusing on the diminutive hero he was finishing his Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy of comedy movies, 2004's Shaun of the Dead, 2007's Hot Fuzz and 2013's The World's End, which starred Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

After apocalyptic zombie and cop buddy action movies, the third installment was a science fiction comedy in which Simon Pegg played cocky loser, 'Gary King', on a pub crawl reunion with his old school friends where they come face to face with a robot invasion in their hometown of Newton Haven.

Guy Speranza was Costume Designer on the movie and you can see more original costumes and props from The World's End on display at the ArcLight Hollywood cinema when it was released in the USA.

This costume was photographed on display at Universal Studios Hollywood on April 15, 2014 and if you like this, be sure to take a look at the other cinematic treasures on display at the film and TV archive exhibit on my most recent visit.

The story follows a young orphaned boy named 'Eggs' in a Victorian-Era town who has been raised by a race of subterranean cavern-dwelling trash-collecting creatures, who must be saved by their human ward when they are targeted by an evil pest exterminator named 'Archibald Snatcher'.

I'm always amazed at the sheer detail that goes into stop-motion creations, from the miniature costumes and faces, to the intricate sets these puppets inhabit, just look at the elaborate detail of the 'Lord and Lady Portley-Rind' characters.

The Boxtrolls who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells, live beneath the town of Cheesebridge and exist by dumpster-diving and collecting the junk left behind by the town's residents, although the townspeople believe they emerge from the sewers to steal their cheese and children at night.

If you like this Laika Studios exhibit, be sure to also check out these stop-motion puppets and sets from ParaNorman and from the world of Coraline.

Costumes from TV's Psych on display...

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

The crime comedy drama Psych ran for eight seasons on USA Network from its debut in July 2006 to the series finale in March 2014. The show centered on James Roday as 'Shawn Spencer' whose observational skills and eidetic memory make it appear than he has psychic abilities and allows him to be a freelance consultant with the Santa Barbara Police Department. He's joined in his investigations by his best friend and business partner 'Burton "Gus" Guster' (played by Dulé Hill).

These costumes worn by the actors in the TV series, with Costume Design by Simon Tuke, were photographed on display at the NBC Universal Experience exhibit on April 15, 2014.

One the left is the outfit worn by James Roday as Shawn Spencer when he goes undercover at a telenovela studio and pretends to play 'Chad' the delivery man in episode thirteen of the second season, 'Lights, camera... Homicidio'.

The other more iconic looking, and timely costume with the release of Michael Jackson's latest album, is an homage to the King of Pop's red leather Thriller jacket, worn in this case by Dulé Hill as 'Gus' when he goes undercover as a contestant in a singing talent show contest in the vein of American Idol in the season two opener.

Original TV props from Warehouse 13 on display...

Friday, May 9, 2014

Syfy's quirky dramatic comedy Warehouse 13 comes to an end after five seasons this May and to mark the occassion the NBC Universal Experience exhibit at Universal Studios Hollywood had this selection of screen-used props from the show on display on April 15, 2014.

The series which started in July 2009 and was a mix of ideas from The X-Files and Raiders of the Lost Ark, and followed U.S. Secret Service Agents 'Myka Bering' (Joanne Kelly) and 'Pete Lattimer' (Eddie McClintock) assigned to a super-secret warehouse facility in South Dakota which houses supernatural artifacts from history and mythology.

In addition the 'Joshua's Trumpet' made from a ram's horn from the season three episode '3...2...1...', which could disintegrate objects with sound waves, the exhibit also had this 'Aztec Bloodstone' from the pilot episode.

One of the most interesting props in my mind is 'Hatshepsut's Golden Beehive' prop which featured in season three's 'Queen for the day'. This small golden beehive apparently belonged to the first female Pharaoh of Egypt, who used it to control human 'drones' with the pheromones of real honey bees.

Also on display was the Pocket 'Ping' device used by tech-wiz hacker 'Claudia Donovan' (Allison Scagliotti) in the season four episode, 'An Evil Within', whilst beside it is a fanged mouth used in the Aztec Bloodstone artifact.

If you like these props, you may also like these original costumes and props from Syfy's Eureka series too.
