Uma Thurman's Poison Ivy costume from Batman & Robin on display...

Sunday, August 17, 2014

Following Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman, plus Batman's male arch-foes The Joker, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and Mr. Freeze, Uma Thurman was only the second woman to play one of the Caped Crusader's female enemies in 1997's Batman & Robin.

This fantastical flora-inspired costume was photographed alongside many other costumes and props from the overly camp Joel Schumacher movie at the 75th Anniversary Batman Exhibit at the Warner Bros. Studios VIP Tour Museum on July 29, 2014.

In Batman & Robin, the Kill Bill actress played a nerdy botanical scientist named 'Dr. Pamela Isley' working at a South American lab funded by Wayne Enterprises. Experimenting with rattlesnake venom and other deadly fluids to help plants fight back against mankind's aggression against nature, the scientist is almost murdered by her boss, 'Dr. Jason Woodrue', but is instead transformed into the deadly 'Poison Ivy' via a volatile combination of plant toxins, venoms and poisons.

The slightly unhinged villainess travels to Gotham City to continue her warped fight for Mother Nature and forms an alliance with 'Mr. Freeze' (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to take on the Dynamic Duo.

Ingrid Ferrin and Robert Turturice was responsible for creating this emerald green leaf creation, which regardless of the poor reception of the movie, has been recreated at conventions and Halloweens many times by fans and cosplayers alike. And hopefully if you are trying to make your own Poison Ivy outfit, then these detail photos will help you.

Just from the look of this genetic animal/plant hybrid created by Poison Ivy, you can tell the movie didn't take itself too seriously, as it's almost like a mini 'Audrey II' alien plant from 1986's Little Shop of Horrors.

Bane mask from 1997's Batman & Robin

We may all now be more familiar with The Dark Knight Rises 'Bane' played by Tom Hardy, but in the 1997 movie the hulking Bane was played by pro-wrestler, Jeep Swenson. In the film Bane became Poison Ivy's thug henchman after being created via an injection of an experimental drug called Venom by Dr. Jason Woodrue.

If you like this mask, be sure to also compare it to Tom Hardy's Bane costume from The Dark Knight Rises on display.

If you like these looks, stick around for more original Batman & Robin costumes, including Alicia Silverstone's Batgirl costume.

Chris Pratt's Star-Lord costume from Guardians of the Galaxy on display...

Sunday, August 3, 2014

Not only are Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy saving the Nova Corps homeworld of Xandar at the moment, but it looks like they are single-handedly saving the Summer box office in the process, with an explosive opening weekend of $94 million in the U.S. and $160 million worldwide. To celebrate, here's a closer look at the signature movie costume worn by 'Peter Quill' aka 'Star-Lord' on display at ArcLight Sherman Oaks cinema on August 1, 2014.

Not only did Chris Pratt look physically amazing in the cosmic Marvel film, but he also looked the part of a roguish space-thief courtesy of Oscar-winning Costume Designer Alexandra Byrne. She's no stranger to superheroes as she was also responsible for costumes on Thor, The Avengers and the forthcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron movie.

Be sure to also check out this period gown worn by Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, for which she won her Academy Award for Best Costume Design and also one of Zoe Saldana's Gamora movie costume from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Originally created by Steve Englehart and Steve Gan and first appearing in Marvel Preview #4 in 1976, this iteration of Star-Lord and his ragtag Guardians of the Galaxy team owe more to the 2008 space-based team comic by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, which saw the half-human/half-alien Peter Jason Quill team-up with 'Rocket Raccoon', 'Gamora', 'Drax The Destroyer', 'Groot' and other cosmic superheroes.

I love that his mask in the movie pays homage to his comic book appearance during that time, and I also predict that more than a few people would love to own Star-Lord's runway-ready short red leather jacket. Aside from being a real comedian, he certainly has that 'Han Solo' swagger in the movie too, helped obviously by his cool attire.

75th Anniversary Batman exhibit on Warner Bros. VIP Studio Tour...

Thursday, July 31, 2014

To mark the 75th Anniversary of DC Comics iconic Caped Crusader, Warner Bros. Studios are throwing open the doors of the Batcave to give VIP Studio Tour visitors a glimpse at original film costumes and props from seven Batman movies at their newly transformed studio museum in Burbank, California.

The whole ground floor now houses the iconic costumes from Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, plus Tim Burton's 1989 and 1992 movies which kickstarted the Bat-franchise on the big screen and even outfits from Joel Schumacher's 1995 and 1997 movies which nearly killed the movie franchise.

Original Batman, Vicki Vale and Joker costumes from 1989's Batman

I have to say the moment I stepped foot through the museum doors I was in comic geek heaven, as I've been fortunate to see movie costumes from the recent Batman movies on display over the years, but to see all of these original costumes in one place was really overwhelming and thrilling at the same time.

Even better the costumes are not hidden behind reflective cases, so you can really have a close look, and you can even taken photos without flashes to preserve the memories.

I remember queueing up outside the cinema for a second time to watch Tim Burton's 1989 Batman and loving seeing the Bat-sign everywhere you looked. Not only was it a joy to see Michael Keaton's Bat-suit (not many of the screen-used versions survived because of the latex material it was made from) and Kim Basinger's 'Vicki Vale' outfit, but seeing Jack Nicholson's crazy 'Joker' costume and his waxwork face really brought back his scene-stealing performance.

Original Penguin costume and props from 1992's Batman Returns

In the 1992 sequel, Batman Returns, Tim Burton really unleashed even more of his unique style on Gotham City and introduced the world to his take on the villainous 'Oswald Cobblepot' aka 'The Penguin', played with relish by Danny DeVito and the conflicted 'Catwoman' played by the sexy Michelle Pfeiffer. Be sure to stay tuned in the days to come for closer looks at each of their fantastic costumes.

Original Two-Face, Riddler, Batman and Robin costumes
from 1995's Batman Forever

In 1995 Joel Schumacher took over the reigns of the Batman film franchise to mixed reviews, casting Val Kilmer as the titular hero and introducing his infamous Boy Wonder sidekick, 'Robin', played by Chris O'Donnell.

In this movie the Dynamic Duo faced twice the trouble in the form of Tommy Lee Jones as 'Harvey Dent' aka 'Two-Face' and Jim Carrey as 'The Riddler'.

At the same time Gotham City went from an atmospheric, dark and brooding environment to a DaGlo, neon fantasyland, which certainly harkened back to the more campy 1960's Batman TV show. You can even see the seismic shift in costume design when you compare the film exhibits, from very gothic and based in some kind of reality to a total comic book style.

Robin, Batman, Batgirl, Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze costumes
from 1997's Batman & Robin
Original 1997 Batman and Robin movie costumes
Even though 1997's even campier Batman & Robin nearly sounded the death knell for the film franchise (apparently the nipples on George Clooney's Bat-suit was a design choice too far), this was one of my favourite costume displays from the entire exhibit.

To be honest, I think that's mainly because of the fantastical illuminated design of Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Mr. Freeze' cryo-suit, which only he could wear, although Uma Thurman's 'Poison Ivy' costume is pretty detailed when you see it up close.

And even though the similar hero 'Bat' costumes became a tangle of pecs and six-pack muscles, it's still pretty cool to get a glimpse of them, including Alicia Silverstone's 'Batgirl' suit (and I would gladly love to own each and every one of them).

Original movie costumes and props from 2005's Batman Begins
Batman Begins movie costumes props
The release of Batman Begins in 2005 saw Christopher Nolan reboot the DC Comics character as a much darker crime-fighter, introducing the husky tones of Christian Bale as Batman and his alter ego 'Bruce Wayne' and retelling his origin story.

The movie pitted Batman against Cillian Murphy's Scarecrow and Liam Neeson's 'Ra's Al Ghul', the leader of the League of Shadows, who had trained Bruce Wayne in the arts of stealth and fighting.

Original costumes and props from 2008's The Dark Knight
Original 2008 Dark Knight movie costumes props
In the 2008 sequel, The Dark Knight, cinema goers were reintroduced to two villains from Batman's rogues gallery. Heath Ledger gave an Oscar-winning performance as 'The Joker', putting a much more sinister spin on there hero's arch-nemesis (although the actor tragically died before the movie was released), whilst Aaron Eckhart brought 'Harvey Dent/Two-Face' to life on the big screen for a second time.

The Batman and Joker costumes from The Dark Knight were two of the first authentic movie costumes I ever saw on display when I moved to L.A. over six years ago, so it was great to see them out from behind their display cases this time around (along with The Joker's creepy nurse outfit, Aaron Eckhart's Two-Face costume and Maggie Gyllenhaal's 'Rachel Dawes' evening gown and a selection of fantastic screen-used props from the movie).

Original costumes and props from The Dark Knight Rises
2012 Dark Knight Rises movie costumes
The Dark Knight Rises in 2012 brought Christopher Nolan's blockbuster trilogy to a close and introduced the world to Tom Hardy's fierce terrorist, 'Bane' (a vast improvement on his Batman & Robin counterpart), Anne Hathaway's 'Catwoman' (a worthy successor to the kitten heels) and Marion Cotillard as the vengeful 'Miranda Tate/Talia al Ghul'.

Again I was fortunate to see three of the original costumes from The Dark Knight Rises over the film's opening weekend at ArcLight Hollywood cinema, but seeing them again out of their protective cases and more of the film's wardrobe besides was a real treat. I really have turned into a movie costume addict.

These amazing comic book movie costumes and props were photographed on July 29, 2014 and if you're a Batman, or even a superhero fan, and you get the opportunity to check out the exhibit at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Museum which houses 25 years of cinematic Batman history, it's worth every penny and the items are fantastically presented.

And if you're looking for Halloween costume inspiration this year, this is the place to go with some classic and modern looks to provide plenty of ideas.

Thor: The Dark World Treasures of Asgard movie props at Disneyland...

Friday, November 15, 2013

I don't know about you, but I absolutely adored Thor: The Dark World with its perfect mix of fantasy, sci-fi and comic book super heroics, and so when I heard about Disneyland's Treasures of Asgard exhibit I knew I had to venture to Anaheim to check out all the original movie props on display for myself on November 12, 2013 (and I wasn't disappointed).

Amongst the treasures on display were a selection of Asgardian weapons and helmets, including the swords and shields of 'Odin's' elite soldiers, 'The Einherjar', plus Dark Elf artifacts featured in the Marvel sequel which sees the thunder god facing the threat of 'Malekith' and the 'Dark Elves of Svartalheim'.

If you like this collection of props featured in the movie, make sure you also check out these original Odin and Frigga costumes from Thor: The Dark World, worn by Anthony Hopkins and Rene Russo respectively.

While you are waiting in line to enter the special Thor interactive attraction it gives you a chance to get better acquainted with Thor's Asgardian companions weapons of choice.

I especially like this sword and small shield combo used by the 'Lady Sif' played by Jaimie Alexander. In the movie universe, Sif has been one of Thor's most loyal friends and confidantes since childhood and harbors seemingly unreciprocated affection for the god of thunder, even though they are mostly lovers in the comic book world. In The Dark World it's nice to see that this lightweight shield can also be used to stab enemies and well as protect the fierce Asgardian warrior.

Before the very first Thor movie opened I got to meet the Lady Sif in person at a comic book signing, so if you're a fan of the actress, be sure to click through and check out these photos of Jaimie Alexander, who was so friendly and such a good sport.

Fandral's sword used by Zachary Levi in Thor: The Dark World

In this sequel Thor's allies, 'The Warriors Three', don't get as much screen time as they deserve, especially Zachary Levi who replaces Once Upon a Time's Josh Dallas as 'Fandral the Dashing'.

Volstagg's axe used by Ray Stevenson in Thor: The Dark World

Meanwhile Ray Stevenson reprises his role as the voluminous 'Volstagg', and aside from wielding this sturdy Asgardian axe against the enemies of the Nine Realms, we also get to see him with some of his family in this movie.

Hogun's mace used by Tadanobu Asano in Thor: The Dark World

With an ever expanding supporting cast, of all The Warriors Three, 'Hogun the Grim' (who's not that grim this time around) probably gets the least screen time after liberating his home realm of Vanaheim near the beginning of the movie with Thor and his friends. Even so, his mace still looks pretty menacing and I for one wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a blow from it.

Personally I would have liked to see more of Lady Sif and The Warriors Three in action than watch Stellan Skarsgård as 'Dr. Erik Selvig' running around naked or in his underwear for most of the movie (that joke got old fast).

Heimdall's helmet worn by Idris Elba in Thor: The Dark World

This is the helmet worn as part of 'Heimdall's' armoured look as the all-seeing, all-knowing gatekeeper of Asgard and guardian of the Bifröst Bridge and it was pretty cool to see up close in person.

Idris Elba's Heimdall gets a great action sequence as the Dark Elves attack in a cloaked ship and he jumps from the Bifröst and uses his two daggers to destroy the craft, only to discover there's worse to come, whilst his impressive long sword seems to act as a key that activates the advanced Asgardian technological powers of the Bifröst.

At the start of the movie we learn that Thor's half-brother Loki has been imprisoned for his crimes against the Earth in the Avengers. These are the shackles, helmet and dagger that Tom Hiddleston uses in the movie in the breakout role of his career, when Thor makes a deal with the devil and asks for the scheming Loki's help to defeat Malekith.

You have to agree that Loki's iconic horned helmet is a real costume showstopper.

Also on display as part of this fantastic exhibit was the 'Book of Yggdrasil', which Odin uses to recount to Thor and his mortal love, 'Dr. Jane Foster', the history and prophecy of the Dark Elves and the magical 'Aether' weapon.

Dark Elf mask and dagger props featured in Thor: The Dark World

One of my favorite pieces in the exhibit was this Dark Elf mask, which is a brilliant creepy design, and I know if the movie had opened before Halloween, everyone would have been wearing one. Apparently the masks are designed to sustain the elves very lives as our universe is poisonous to them and the ornate masks show their once beautiful and noble features, which now hide their more hideous faces.

The mask is accompanied by the Dagger of Malekith himself, an ancient weapon forged of Dark Matter and used during the siege of Asgard.

And finally amongst all these weapons and war props, was this charming Asgardian skiff toy, which shows that even though the Asgardians are highly advanced beings, their children still like to use their imagination to play with toys.

Marvel's Treasures of Asgard exhibit will be open at Disneyland's Innoventions attraction in Tomorrowland until at least January 6, 2014, so if you get a chance, be sure to check it out.

Stick around in the days to come as you'll be treated to original Loki, Fandral and Sif movie costumes from Thor: The Dark World on display, which will be well worth the wait.
