Saving Mr. Banks movie costumes on display...

Friday, September 20, 2013

Saving Mr. Banks is the forthcoming biographical drama from Disney about the author of Mary Poppins, P.L. Travers, and centres around her difficult childhood in Australia and her negotiations with Walt Disney to obtain the screen rights to her infamous novel about the magical nanny. The title is taken from the patriarchal character of the same name, who was inspired by the writer's own father.

These original costumes worn by Tom Hanks as 'Walt Disney' himself and Emma Thompson as 'P.L. Travers' to the Chinese Theatre Hollywood film premiere, were photographed on display at the D23 Expo 2013 in Anaheim, California on August 9, 2013.

They were part of the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibit celebrating 50 years of the 1964 hit musical movie and were on display alongside original film costumes and props from Mary Poppins.

Also on display were 1960's inspired costumes designed by Daniel Orlandi and worn by B.J. Novak and Jason Schwartzman as 'Robert' and 'Richard Sherman' respectively, the legendary songwriting duo responsible for penning the musical movie's memorable and much beloved tunes.

I believe that the red waistcoat outfit belongs to the Richard Sherman character in the movie.

I have to say I also love the promotional teaser poster for Saving Mr. Banks and the way Walt Disney casts the shadow of his iconic creation, Mickey Mouse, and P.L. Travers casts the shadow of the umbrella-wielding British nanny.

Oz and Witches costumes from Oz The Great and Powerful on display at the D23 Expo 2013...

Monday, September 16, 2013

Back in March when the movie was released I was fortunate to see the three lead witches costumes and accompanying props from Oz The Great and Powerful on display at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. At this year's Disney D23 Fan Expo on August 9, 2013 I was able to see some of the same costumes up close and out from behind their display cases, plus even more original costumes from Disney's Wizard of Oz prequel.

In addition to the re-imagined 'Wicked Witch of the West' costume worn by Mila Kunis there was also the outfit and hat the actress wore as 'Theodora' when she first meets James Franco's 'Oz' (whose costume was also on display), plus the show-stopping emerald gown worn by Rachel Weisz as the scheming 'Evanora' was also part of the exhibit from the movie.

If you love these outfits, you should also check out the addition Winkie Guard, Munchkin Herald Knuck and Master Tinker costumes also on display at the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibit.

Also worth a special mention was this very expressive 'China Girl' prop which was included in the showcase, even though she was created digitally in the movie I'm sure this one was used in the production, by the actors to hold and perform against.

Even though she may have been a very bad witch, Rachel Weisz's 'Evanora' certainly had the best and most sparkling gowns in the movie, which were designed by Gary Jones. This particular vision in green was worn by the actress when she welcomes James Franco's 'Oscar Diggs' to the Emerald City in the earlier stages of the fantasy film and she looks very much the reigning empress or fairytale evil queen.

If you're a fan of this magnificently beaded art deco-inspired dress, be sure to also check out this other darker Evanora costume from Oz The Great and Powerful worn in the second half of the movie.

Having already seen her Wicked Witch costume on display previously, it was nice to see this different outfit worn by Mila Kunis as 'Theodora' as part of the exhibit. In the movie she wears this hat and high fashion costume when she finds Oz after he's crash landed in his hot air balloon.

Here's also the updated version of the iconic Wicked Witch of the West costume, which you can see is much more sleeker and sexier black leather look than the original witch costume from 1939's The Wizard of Oz (although almost impossible to photograph black on black in the dim lighting used to protect the garments on display).

Theodora wears this darker ensemble when she's tricked by her sister Evanora and transformed into the hideous green-skinned witch we know and love.

When traveling-circus magician and con man 'Oscar Diggs' is caught in a cyclone that magically transports him to the Land of Oz he doesn't have time to pack a change of clothes, so this turn of the century black cutaway suit had to work for the black and white Kansas scenes set in 1905 and for his time in the colourful world of Oz. You'll notice his waistcoat is green (and his top hat also has a green trim too).

Finally this gorgeous gown worn by Michelle Williams as 'Glinda the Good Witch of the South' was also previously display at the El Capitan Theatre, but it was nice to see it out from behind its reflective display case, to see the detail of the dress up close.

Glinda looks very much the Disney princess in this white feathered and beaded dress which is featured in the latter part of the movie. Interestingly looking at Glinda's glittering footwear, I'm reminded that in the original L. Frank Baum 'Oz' books the magical shoes that transport 'Dorothy' home to Kansas are silver and not the now iconic ruby colour.

If you've enjoyed these wonderful costumes, you may also want to take a look at these original costumes and props from Disney's Return to Oz from 1985.

Fairytale costumes from Once Upon a Time on display...

Saturday, September 7, 2013

In October 2011 American viewers were re-introduced to some of their favourite fairytale characters, but this time on the small screen in the new ABC series Once Upon a Time. Once again good did battle against evil, but this time there was a twist, evil had already won and cast a spell so that the heroes and their friends no longer remembered who they were or where they were from. These cursed characters lived in a small town in our world devoid of magic called 'Storybrooke', and over time we discovered their histories from the 'Enchanted Forest' and learned more about their false new lives.

With the third season of the show returning to U.S. screens at the end of September, this wonderful collection of costumes from the series were exhibited at Disney's third D23 Fan Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center on August 9, 2013.

If you were looking for some fresh inspiration this Halloween from the world of fables, folklore and fairytales, then look no further than these fantastic costumes designed by series costumer Eduardo Castro, who has reinvented the looks of many of your favourite classic characters like Snow White, Red Riding Hood, Prince Charming and The Mad Hatter.

In the real world of Storybrooke she's diner waitress named 'Ruby', but in the magical Enchanted Forest, 'Red' (played by Meghan Ory) wears this peasant girl outfit complete with red cloak as her 'Little Red Riding Hood' namesake. In this telling of the infamous fairytale, Red is actually a werewolf (she's The Big Bad Wolf) and the magical red cloak helps prevent her lycanthropic transformation.

Meanwhile I believe this regal looking silver grey outfit is worn by Josh Dallas as 'Prince Charming' for his wedding to Snow White. When we first meet him in the real world his alter-ego 'David Nolan' is in a coma and when he awakens with amnesia, but over time through flashback we learn his rich and complicated history with his true love, 'Snow'.

I'm sure a lot of visitors to the Once Upon a Time costume exhibit loved seeing Snow White's wedding dress on display, even though the beautiful white feathered gown was hard to photograph under the dim lighting used to protect the original garments.

In the world of Storybrooke her alter-ego is a timid school teacher named 'Mary Margaret Blanchard', but in the Enchanted Forest she's a much more feisty 'Snow White', and she's equally at home in fighting garb as well a beautiful fairytale gown.

Next on display is the Enchanted Forest's 'Huntsman' costume worn by male model and actor Jamie Dornan (whose counterpart is Storybrooke's initial Sheriff, 'Graham'). Just like in fairytale legend this forest hunter was tasked by the 'Evil Queen' to kill 'Snow White'.

For another take on the story, be sure to check out these original costumes and props from 2012's Snow White and The Huntsman movie.

Mad Hatter costume worn by Sebastian Stan in Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time also dabbled in the world of Alice in Wonderland and introduced viewers to their own version of 'The Mad Hatter' (aka 'Jefferson'), played by Sebastian Stan ('Bucky' in Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger movie and soon to return in the sequel as 'The Winter Soldier').

If you like this eccentric outfit, you'll also want to compare it to Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter movie costumes from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.

And finally keeping some of the best until last, another highlight of the costume exhibit was this rich and opulent costume worn by Barbara Hershey as the Evil Queen's exiled mother 'Cora' in her Wonderland 'Queen of Hearts' persona.

As you can see these fairytale-themed costumes were pretty magical, and if you're a fan of the show, be sure to also check these screen-used props from Once Upon a Time.
