Original DeLorean Time Machine car from Back to the Future...

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Even though the NBC Universal Experience attraction boasted a wonderful collection of Oscar-winning and nomination costumes, plus iconic outfits and props from classic and newer movies, the centerpiece of the exhibit had to be the restored DeLorean Time Machine 'hero car' featured in the Back to the Future trilogy.

Even though six different cars were used in the production of the films, this 'hero car' photographed on display at Universal Studios Hollywood on May 7, 2013, was the vehicle used for key driving sequences and close ups.

'Doc Brown's' iconic DeLorean Time Machine was designed by Ron Cobb and Andrew Probert. The concept was to make the customised DeLorean look like it had been assembled in Doc's garage from all kinds of eclectic materials from local electronics and hardware stores. The most important prop feature on the back of the car is the nuclear reactor which powers the time travel.

Pretty awesome, right? It's certainly a cool piece of nostalgia from my movie watching childhood (although quite hard to photograph with that lighting and far better to see in person).

If you like this original picture car, be sure to also check out this Marty McFly costume worn by Michael J. Fox and props from the Back to the Future trilogy on display.

Back to the Future Marty McFly costume and props on display...

Sunday, June 2, 2013

In addition to all the costumes and props from new movies like Les Misérables, Anna Karenina and Snow White & The Huntsman there were also some true classic pieces on display at Universal Studios Hollywood on May 7, 2013, including a costume worn by Michael J. Fox as 'Marty McFly', plus cool props from the Back to the Future film trilogy.

This cowboy costume is from 1990's third Western-themed installment of the movie franchise and was designed by Joanna Johnston. You can also see her more recent work in these movie costumes from Lincoln and War Horse, which are also time period specific outfits.

Personally I love the atomic symbols on Michael J. Fox's cowboy outfit, it gives the Western look a futuristic quality, helping to portray that he's a man out of time.

Alongside this cool costume from the third movie there were also cool props from the first two films, including a newspaper from the original Back to the Future from 1985.

It's so funny now to see these props from 1989's Back to the Future II and how they imagined things like a pizza cooker would look in the future.

If you like these, be sure to also check out these fantastic hoverboard props from Back to the Future II and more models and miniatures used to produce the trilogy.

Also on display were the plans from the film's crucial Clocktower set which Marty and 'Dr. Emmett Brown' use to harness lightning to re-power the time-traveling DeLorean car.

Roy Scheider's police uniform and concept sketches from Jaws...

Sunday, May 19, 2013

As it's been over thirty-five years since the Steven Spielberg's Jaws terrorised the big screen, it was a bit of a thrill to see these concept drawings for the Great White Shark and especially the original Amity Police Chief uniform worn by Roy Scheider on display at Universal Studios Hollywood on May 7, 2013.

Robert Ellsworth was responsible for the men's wardrobe on this classic movie from 1975 and seeing this costume was really like seeing a little piece of movie history.

I've seen these shark sketches and schematics as part of the NBC Universal exhibit before, but it's nice to see them with an accompanying costume from the movie too.
