Val Kilmer's Sonar Bat-suit and Chris O'Donnell's Robin costume from Batman Forever on display...

Thursday, August 14, 2014

When Michael Keaton was first announced as the star of Tim Burton's Batman many fans initially questioned his choice, especially because of his height, physicality and previous comedic roles, but he soon proved them wrong. When Val Kilmer replaced him as 'Bruce Wayne' in 1995's Batman Forever although he was more physically suitable, some believed he gave a wooden performance as the Caped Crusader in Joel Schumacher's first, more family-friendly, entry in the Batman movie franchise.

In the movie the actor wore two different Bat-suits and one of these was on display as part of the Batman 75th Anniversary Exhibit at Warner Bros. Studios VIP Tour Museum on July 29, 2014.

Bob Ringwood and Ingrid Ferrin were responsible for Costume Design on the movie and this particular version is the prototype Sonar Bat-suit, which is more silvery and has the Bat logo incorporated into the design and spread across his chest. Batman is forced to use this outfit when The Riddler destroys his other Bat-suits.

In addition to facing new cinematic villains Two-Face and The Riddler, the film also famously introduced Batman's young partner in crime-fighting, 'Robin', the Boy Wonder. The other half of the Dynamic Duo was played by Chris O'Donnell as the circus acrobat 'Dick Grayson'.

In the movie his circus perfumer parents and older brother 'The Flying Graysons' were killed by the psychotic Two-Face. Invited to stay at Wayne Manor, because Batman felt partly responsible for the creation of the villain, Dick soon discovers the Batcave and gets his own red-breasted crime-fighting muscle suit to help Batman defeat The Riddler and get his revenge on Two-Face.

And if you like these superhero costumes, be sure to also take a look at the comic book villain costumes from Batman Forever on display.

In addition to the fantastical costumes from the movie, the exhibit which featured original items from all seven Batman movies, also had a selection of screen-used props from this third film.

Mounted on the wall behind the costume display was Batman's new Batwing model, plus a selection of villains and hero weapons and artifacts used prominently in the film.

Batman Forever may not have been one of my favourite installments, but it's always a treat to see costumes and props from the archives up close, that have been featured in these big budget blockbusters.

Stay tuned in the days to come for more cinematic goodies from 1997's Batman & Robin.

Picture cars from The Mummy and Public Enemies on display...

Friday, June 20, 2014

For a change of pace here at Hollywood Movie Costumes and Props I thought I'd feature two picture cars that I spied on my most recent visit to Universal Studios Hollywood in the Upper Lot on April 15, 2014, which played a part in 1999's The Mummy and 2009's Public Enemies.

This yellow 1931 Duesenberg Model J car belongs to John Hannah's 'Jonathan Carnahan' character in the fantasy adventure and was featured in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns.

If you're a fan of movies, be sure to check out more original costumes, props and models from The Mummy movie franchise.

Secondly, this black 1935 Chevrolet Model EC-601 featured in 2009's Public Enemies, which starred Johnny Depp as the notorious bank robber 'John Dillinger' during America's Great Depression.

I believe the French Police logo has been added to this car after the film to fit in with the French-themed area within the amusement park.

Be sure to also take a look at these original costumes from Public Enemies worn by Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard, alongside screen-used props featured in the movie.

Fun screen-used props featured in Muppets Most Wanted on display...

Friday, March 28, 2014

Muppets Most Wanted may not be setting any U.S. box office records compared to the 2011 The Muppets big screen revival, but I thought this latest cinematic outing of Jim Henson's creations was great fun, with all your favourite Muppets in character and with some stand out musical numbers, like 'The Big House' and 'I'll Get You What You Want (Cockatoo in Malibu)'.

Having seen the comedy crime caper it was also pretty cool to see these screen-used props from the film in person, on display with Miss Piggy's couture costumes from Muppets Most Wanted at the infamous El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on March 21, 2014.

In the Muppets newest adventure, after their comeback the gang are convinced to go on a world tour by Ricky Gervais' 'Dominic Badguy', who is in league with a 'Kermit the Frog' imposter and master criminal, 'Constantine'. Meanwhile whilst Kermit is thrown into a Russian Gulag where Tina Fey is the warden, the diabolical duo use the Muppets stage shows to distract from their crime heists, with the ultimate goal to steal England's Crown Jewels.

With no Kermit to manage the show, all kinds of things go on that would never have happened, like an extra long sleep-inducing music gig by 'Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem', including fan-favourite 'Animal' on drums.

The Muppets world tour takes them to Berlin, Madrid, Dublin and London, and here's Miss Piggy's Berlin dressing room set on display. The German translation of The Muppets makes for a nice visual language gag with the 'Die Muppets' venue sign.

Even though this Berlin set doesn't appear in the movie for long, it goes to show how much work and effort, and the little touches, that go into creating the Muppets world.

If you like this fun backstage room set, be sure to check out these recreations of Kermit's office and Miss Piggy's dressing room from The Muppets movie in 2011.

Constantine and his henchman's crime spree through the galleries and vaults of Europe is actually a quest to find clues to help them steal the British Crown Jewels. To do this they steal a painting of 'Colonel Thomas Blood' which has a secret treasure map on the back, which leads them to a golden locket and key in the Irish National Bank in Dublin.

The bust from Madrid's museum is actually an ancestor of Dominic Badguy and the coins at the base are the calling card of his criminal persona, 'The Lemur', which he leaves at the scene of a crime.

By thew way the knight statues above are from the Tower of London vault where the Crown Jewels are kept.

In the movie Ty Burrell plays a French Interpol inspector, 'Jean Pierre Napoleon', trying to solve these crimes with the aid of the CIA's 'Sam the Eagle'.

These I.D. credential props are from a fun scene where the international law enforcement agents try to one-up each other with the size of their badges, and you can also see more if you take a look at Ty Burrell's Interpol badge costume from Muppets Most Wanted on display at ArcLight Sherman Oaks cinema. As you can see, Sam the Eagle wins this battle of wills when his giant CIA badge arrives via UPS carrier.

And finally, another one of these tiny green Le Maximum Interpol car props was on display at ArcLight Sherman Oaks, but the El Capitan Theatre also had one in their foyer for cinema goers to enjoy.

As you can see there was a wealth of fantastic props to enjoy and you can see them all in person at the Hollywood venue, along with the costumes and Miss Piggy's Vivienne Westwood wedding dress, until April 17, 2014.
