With the 85th Academy Awards fast approaching here's the perfect opportunity to have a closer look at a previous Oscar-winning Costume Designer's work, in this instance from Stanley Kubrick's 1975 period drama, Barry Lyndon.

Milena Canonero and Ulla-Britt Söderland shared the Oscar for Best Costume Design on Barry Lyndon and these 18th Century period costumes from the film were photographed on display at the Stanley Kubrick exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on January 10, 2013.

It's always a pleasure to be able to see movie costumes up close, especially when they are not surrounded by a display case.

Many of the costumes used in Barry Lyndon were genuine antique clothes, whilst other were custom-made for the film based on clothing represented in period paintings. Milena Canonero drew inspiration for the scenes in England from such works by Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds, whilst for the movie's candlelit scenes the Italian designer was influenced by the German painter Adolph Menzel.

Original masks from Eyes Wide Shut on display...

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

These cool masks are from legendary director Stanley Kubrick's final movie from 1999, Eyes Wide Shut, which starred Hollywood's hottest celebrity couple at the time, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

These Venetian-style masks were worn in a massive masked orgy of a secret underground cult that Tom Cruise's 'Dr. Bill Harford' becomes entangled with when exploring his sexual urges.

Costumes and props from A Clockwork Orange on display...

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

Stanley Kubrick's controversial Oscar-nominated 1971 dystopian future sci-fi classic was largely banned and made unavailable in Britain for around twenty-seven years due to its depiction of extreme sexual violence. Having grown up in the U.K. during this time, I found it even more interesting to see this collection of movie memorabilia for A Clockwork Orange so openly displayed at LACMA's Stanley Kubrick exhibit.

The exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art was comprised mainly of reproduction costumes and props, but it did feature the original sword cane used by Malcolm McDowell as the sociopathic delinquent 'Alex DeLarge' in the movie set in a futuristic Britain.

Milena Canonero was the original Costume Designer responsible for creating the now iconic look for Alex and his ultra-violent thug gang of 'Droogs'.

At other ends of the spectrum, you can also see her Oscar-winning period costume designs in Barry Lyndon and outfits used in The Shining horror movie.

Also on display were mannequin reproductions of the Korova Milk Bar maids, which have a real 70's vibe to them, used as set dressing and ornamental tables in the futuristic bar where the youth gangs indulge in the intoxicating 'milk plus' (from the mannequin's breasts no less).

It's amazing how the world has moved on and imagery like this is no longer as shocking as it was forty years ago, although the societal, political and economic themes of the movie, like gang violence, are still relevant today.

Original spacesuit and helmet from 2001: A Space Odyssey on display...

Sunday, January 27, 2013

Stanley Kubrick's 1968 epic sci-fi movie 2001: A Space Odyssey was inspired by Arthur C. Clarke's short story The Sentinel and chronicled a series of encounters between humanity and mysterious black monoliths and their apparent involvement in human evolution. Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood star as astronauts who undertake a fantastic voyage with the sentient computer HAL 9000 after discovering such a monolith on the Moon emitting a signal into space.

For the exhibit they cleverly projected the actor's likeness onto the visor of the helmet to recreate the feel of the movie.
